This week: a vegetarian breakfast burrito that had sausage in it, and pistachio in a Cadbury bar

The recall: a vegetarian breakfast burrito that had sausage in it

Fresh & Ready Foods is recalling its Spicy Breakfast Burrito, sold under the Sprig & Sprout and Fresh and Ready names, because it contains soy the label does not declare. The soy got there the hard way: the burrito was labeled vegetarian, and customers opened one to find sausage inside. The sausage is what brought the soy. The FDA logged the alert and later elevated it to high risk.

Soy is one of the nine major allergens, and a grab-and-go breakfast is exactly the moment you are not reading a label, because it says vegetarian and you are already out the door. This one went to grab-and-go markets and vending machines across Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, made in Charlotte between July 9 and 12 with a Fresh Thru date of July 20. If one is in your fridge, do not eat it. Take it back or throw it out.

Two more worth flagging

A Cadbury bar with undeclared pistachio. The CFIA logged a Class 1 recall on July 24 for Cadbury Dairy Milk Oreo candy bars in Canada because they contain pistachio, a tree nut, that is not on the label. Class 1 is the CFIA’s highest-risk tier, the one it uses when a reaction is a real possibility. This is a bar people buy on the name alone, which is exactly why the missing line matters. If someone in the house reacts to tree nuts, check the wrapper this week.

A wholesale chocolate line pulled in the UK for milk and soya. The FSA recalled Bon Bons Wholesale chocolate products because they contain milk and soya that are not declared on the label. Milk is the most common childhood food allergy, and loose or wholesale-packed sweets are a common place for a label to fall short. If either allergen is one you check for, do not eat these until you have read the notice.

The rest of the week, by country

United States. Fresh & Ready / Sprig & Sprout Spicy Breakfast Burrito, undeclared soy (the lead above).

Canada. Cadbury Dairy Milk Oreo Candy bar, undeclared pistachio.

United Kingdom. Bon Bons Wholesale chocolate products, undeclared milk and soya.

The pattern this week: the label pointed the wrong way

All three recalls this week are a label saying something the product was not. A burrito marked vegetarian had meat in it. A candy bar you buy by the name carried a nut nobody listed. A box of sweets left off two of the nine. None of these is a case of reading the fine print and missing it. The fine print was wrong, which is the harder kind to catch, and the reason a recall notice does the catching for you.

Before you go

Each recall above links to its primary agency notice, with product photos and lot numbers. I go through the federal and provincial recall feeds every week and post what an allergy household would actually want flagged. The next one lands next week.

Not medical advice. Every reaction is different, so follow the emergency action plan you built with your allergist; if you do not have one, that is the ask for your next visit. When a reaction is severe or you are not sure how bad it is, do not delay epinephrine, then call for help.

These are summaries of official recall notices from the U.S. FDA, USDA FSIS, Canada's CFIA, and the UK FSA. Each product above links to its primary source. This is reporting on public recall notices, not a substitute for medical advice.
