The egg in this cheese is called lysozyme

Check this one first: the cheese counter

Whole Foods Market is recalling Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme cheese for undeclared egg. The egg in it is lysozyme, an egg white protein, and the word “egg” was not on the label.

It was sold at the specialty cheese department in 18 stores across Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. Two scale labels to check: PLU 57953, “Formagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme Raw Milk, Aged 60 days,” all best-by dates up to and including 10/7/2026, in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. PLU 54670, “Belgian Cabricharme,” in California and Arizona.

The mechanism is the part to carry forward. This cheese was cut and plastic-wrapped by the pound, in store, with a Whole Foods scale label on it. A scale label is a short label: a name, a weight, a price, a PLU.

A store team member found the problem. Nobody reported an illness. Whole Foods says you do not need to bring it back, and to destroy it instead, with a refund available on a valid receipt.

The Class 1: peanut in a soybean paste

Lemond Food Corp. and Seoul Trading Corp. are recalling Ofood Mild Ssamjang Original Seasoned Soybean Paste for improperly declared peanut, across Canada, in all three sizes: 170 g, UPC 8 801052 048192; 500 g, UPC 8 801052 048215; 1 kg, UPC 8 801052 048208. The affected codes are “all codes where peanut is not declared on the bilingual label.”

The CFIA published it as a Class 1 Food recall warning, its top severity and the tier it pushes out publicly rather than filing as a notification. A consumer complaint is what opened the file. No reactions have been reported.

Ssamjang is a pantry jar. It gets bought once and used slowly, so the jar in the fridge door may well predate the notice.

The rest, by country

Canada. Co-op Gold Frozen Chicken Products, undeclared egg, Class 2, recalled by Federated Co-operatives Limited across Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. Two products: Chicken Burgers, 904 g, UPC 0 57316 21795 0, best before 2027-JN-18 lot 100808, 2027-JL-02 lot 101118, and 2027-JL-22 lot 101600. Maple & Brown Sugar Bacon Wrapped Chicken Bites, 360 g, UPC 0 57316 21861 2, best before 2027-JN-03 lot 100449.

Rossdown Farms & Natural Foods Meal Starters Black Garlic Chicken Breast products, undeclared soy, Class 2, national, recalled by Rossdown Natural Foods Ltd. Three products, all Black Garlic Chicken Breast: the 350 g breast, UPC 6 28000 60073 2, codes 2461263, 2461267 and 2461277; the 840 g chunks, UPC 6 28000 60094 7, codes 2461263 and 2461272; the 350 g skewers, UPC 6 28000 60032 9, codes 2461266, 2461267 and 2461270.

The pattern this week

Co-op Gold is the fourth undeclared-egg notice on Canadian chicken since August 6, and there are three separate label failures behind those four notices.

Two of them are one recall widening. Compliments Smashed 100% Chicken Burgers on August 6 named a single lot, BB 2027-JA-06, Lot 00099193. The August 31 notice kept the same product and the same UPC, 0 55742 58333 5, and widened it to all codes where egg is not declared. The other two are their own: Cardinal Roadhouse Chicken Burgers on August 21, and Co-op Gold now, which is itself two products.

Three brands, three label failures, all of them formed chicken. None of the notices says why, and three failures are too few to establish a cause. They still mark an aisle worth the extra minute. If your household avoids egg and buys formed chicken patties, burgers or bites, read the panel on every restock, including on a brand you cleared last month.

One note on coverage

One item is being held back rather than reported. A Created Fresh Cranberry Chicken Salad Wedge Sandwich, from FreshPoint of Orlando, was reported on September 8 as recalled for undeclared egg by Food Poisoning Bulletin, which is published by a law firm that takes food-poisoning cases. It is a US meat and poultry product, which puts it under FSIS, and the FSIS notice pages block automated access. I have not been able to read the primary notice, so it does not get written up here as a confirmed recall.

If you buy wedge sandwiches from a convenience store in Georgia or Florida and avoid egg, it is worth knowing the report exists while I keep trying to confirm it.

Before you go

Each recall above links to its primary agency notice, where the affected products are identified in full: by size, UPC and code on the Canadian notices, and by PLU, state and best-by date at the Whole Foods cheese counter. I go through the US, Canadian and UK recall feeds every week and post what an allergy household would actually want flagged.

Not medical advice. Every reaction is different, so follow the emergency action plan you built with your allergist; if you do not have one, that is the ask for your next visit. When a reaction is severe or you are not sure how bad it is, do not delay epinephrine, then call for help.

These are summaries of official recall notices from the U.S. FDA, USDA FSIS, Canada's CFIA, and the UK FSA. Each product above links to its primary source. This is reporting on public recall notices, not a substitute for medical advice.
